City considers truck terminal to help ease traffic in Naga

By: Armie B.Gunay, CEPPIO

With the issue of traffic congestion still being one of the top concerns of the City Government of Naga, Vice Mayor Nelson Legacion had recently shared some of the measures they have been working on in the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) to help resolve the problem— one of which is the establishment of a truck terminal, as proposed by a private entity.

Vice Mayor Nelson Legacion mentioned that the presence of parked trucks and container vans in the various thoroughfares in the city can be widely observed, particularly along the Magsaysay Avenue and Diversion Roads.

He further noted that parked vehicles alongside any thoroughfares in the city contribute further to traffic congestion.

With the proposed truck terminal, the SP is seeing its help in easing traffic congestion problem, as well as in maintaining orderliness in the city.

Although the construction of the terminal will be managed by the private entity, the city government will intervene in matters involving public interest.

One could be the passage of an ordinance that will require truck owners and drivers to park in the designated truck terminal and not somewhere else.

The proponent would also be required to submit a Comprehensive Development Land Use Plan in the 4.3 hectares near the Bicol River in Barangay Tabuco where he intends to establish the truck terminal, considering the introduction of possible economic and commercial growth in the area.

Other takes being discussed by the SP members on the traffic congestion issue include still the relocation of Camarines Sur Electric Cooperative (CASURECO) electrical posts that affect traffic flow in the city and the road widening projects with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the entry points to the city.
